I was told by Prof. Peter Hook from Michigan Univ. that there is there is a discussion of this form-meaning mismatch in one of the commentaries on Panini--probably in Patanjali's mahabhasya somewhere. Since you know Sanskrit and you are doing linguistics I thought you will be the best person to consult on this. I do not have access to Mahabhasya here in Japan.
